CBD For Guinea Pigs

CBD For Guinea Pigs

At the end of a long, grueling work day, you open the door and your pet guinea pig is waiting to greet you. Your stress level immediately drops and your guinea is so happy you are finally home.

Aren’t pets wonderful? Our furry friends are always there for us, and in return for their love and loyalty, pet owners want to provide the best possible care for their beloved pets.

Guinea pigs are relatively easy to care for because in general, they are hardy and healthy animals. However, like any pet, pigs can be susceptible to certain health problems. If you are the proud owner of a guinea pig, make sure you have a veterinarian experienced in the care of smaller pets. Most veterinarians do have experience in caring for common household pets.

When your pet is ill or even at the end of life, we as pet owners want to provide safe, effective and humane treatments. Animals often cannot show us how they feel, so product safety becomes even more important.

Naturally, you want to monitor your pet’s health and make sure the pet has the medical care they need. By now, you’ve likely heard of CBD for humans as well as pets. As the benefits of CBD become more apparent to pet owners, many have decided to add high quality CBD to their pet’s daily regimen.

Pet CBD products are specifically formulated for pet use per their size and unique anatomy; you should never give human CBD oil to a pet. We know you have questions, and we’re here to answer them!

Can I give my guinea pig CBD?

Yes! While most CBD products on the market are formulated for dogs and cats, small animals like guinea pigs, rabbits and hamsters can definitely benefit from CBD. Here’s why. CBD is a substance that has been isolated from either the marijuana plant or the hemp plant. CBD is a phytocannabinoid substance that is non-hallucinogenic, meaning it does not produce the high that marijuana is known for.

The amazing thing about plant phytocannabinoids is that they work with the mammalian endocannabinoid system. All animals have endocannabinoid systems that help the body maintain function. In particular, the endocannabinoid system helps neurological function and immune function. Animals make their own endocannabinoids, but some ailments result from an endocannabinoid deficiency. This is where phytocannabinoids like CBD can help by making up for any losses. These chemicals bind with the endocannabinoid receptors to restore balance to the body and help repair and restore.

What guinea pig health problems can be helped by CBD?

Small animals do suffer from stress and anxiety which can occur for many reasons. Guinea pigs are very social and become stressed if they live alone without another pig. They also need daily attention from humans in order to thrive. Guinea pigs actually get depressed if they live by themselves. They can have a tendency to be shy and nervous, so they do best in a calm, quiet environment.

Guinea pigs are very prone to arthritis, and their painful, swollen joints are usually due to a deficiency of Vitamin C. CBD is well known for its pain-relieving benefits, and is also a big inflammation fighter, both of which can help with your pet’s arthritis.

Science has shown phytocannabinoids to be very effective in calming animals and bringing balance to their bodies. Many pets suffer from anxiety, separation anxiety, mobility issues, inflammation, general pain or joint pain, seizures and other neurological issues, loss of appetite, and effects from cancer and cancer treatments. CBD can help.

What can I give my guinea pig as a treat?

Aside from regular guinea pig food that is specially formulated, your guinea should have fresh vegetables and fruit as snacks to ensure your pet does not have a Vitamin C deficiency. Most veterinarians recommend a daily dose of about 50mg of Vitamin C, and that can be achieved by giving your pet about ¾ cup per day of veggies or 1/3 cup per day of fruit. You can also add vitamin C to your pet’s food or water, or purchase specially formulated snacks from most pet stores.

What is difference CBD oil and hemp oil?

CBD is found in both marijuana and hemp plants. Some CBD products on the market are cannabis-based, while other CBD products are derived from hemp. CBD oil can be derived from the cannabis sativa (marijuana) plant or from hemp plants. CBD oils are oils that primarily contain CBD and no other compounds. A base oil such as coconut or olive oil might be used, but CBD is the pure component in the oil.

Hemp oil, on the other hand, is also derived from the hemp plant, but contains other cannabinoids and substances like terpenes that naturally occur in the hemp plant. Hemp oils are sometimes referred to as full-spectrum oils because they contain the full spectrum of substances found in hemp.

However, hemp cannot get you high. These days, most CBD oils are derived from a special strain of hemp called PCR or phytocannabinoid rich hemp. PCR hemp has been specifically bred to eliminate THC, the compound that creates the high in marijuana. Hemp looks and smells like marijuana and it is grown in the same way, but it has little or no THC.

Is CBD for pets different than CBD for humans?

While both humans and guinea pigs have endocannabinoid systems, those systems are very different from each other, so your pet should only take CBD specially formulated for the type of pet. You should never give your pet human CBD oil and humans should not take pet CBD oil.

Dosing is very important for pet CBD. Guinea pig products are formulated for a guinea-sized endocannabinoid systems and dosing is done by weight. A common rule of thumb for any pet is 5mg of CBD per 50 pet pounds, but consult with your veterinarian before you start CBD to ensure the proper dosing. CBD is safe for not only guinea pigs, but also rabbits, chinchillas, hamsters and hedgehogs.

When you first start giving CBD to your pet, it is recommended that you don’t give CBD more than twice per day while your guinea gets used to it and you as a pet owner have time to understand how the animal is reacting to it.

Nevertheless, CBD is extremely safe; it is non-toxic and non-hallucinogenic. In short, CBD will not make your pet high. Your pet will rarely have negative side effects with CBD, but the most common symptom is drowsiness, as high doses of CBD have been shown to have a sedative effect.

Many pet owners find it convenient to use a dropper bottle to give CBD to smaller pets, but topical CBD in a cream form can also be used, particularly for injuries like infections, cuts, rashes or burns. Very small amounts can be topically applied inside a guinea pig’s ears; the CBD is quickly absorbed through the ears’ abundant blood vessels.

Why does my guinea pig bite me?

Small animals typically do not like change, so if change happens, they can get very anxious. If your guinea pig does not feel safe, this may be the reason he or she is overeating or squeaking or biting you. Loud noises can create fear, as can mishandling of your guinea pig, and fear can lead to biting.

CBD-infused pet products have become incredibly popular over the last several years. More pet owners want natural treatments for their pets. If you are considering CBD, talk to your vet about questions and concerns.

As a pet owner, education and information are key. It is important to know that CBD products are not all equal. Make sure that ingredients are clearly labeled and that the company producing the CBD product has it third-party lab tested. Third party lab testing is a standard in the cannabis industry meant to ensure both quality and safety. If the manufacturer has nothing to hid, the lab tests will be available right on their web site. Also look for organic, GMO hemp grown by reputable farmers.

As a phytocannabinoid, CBD shows incredible promise as a natural way for the body to maintain balance (called homeostasis). The discovery of endocannabinoid systems in humans and animals is relatively new; scientists didn’t discover this revelation until the mid-1990s, but found that plant chemicals like CBD definitely fit both human and animal receptors. CBD even works on the smallest animals, like guinea pigs, so if your piggy has been feeling a little wiggy, try CBD specially formulated for small animals. Give it a try.
