Benefits of Hemp Oil for Hair Health
You know that Instagram model you follow? The one with the thick, long, flowing locks that never seem to be out of place, even when they #wokeuplikethis? They’re likely sponsored by some beauty company that invests thousands of dollars on curating their image. But you can’t be blamed for craving luscious locks.
Fortunately, you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to get great hair. Moreover, you don’t need to waste your hair away with tons of chemicals that you can’t pronounce. There’s an affordable, all-natural product just waiting for you to discover it. And now you have.
It’s hemp oil.
In this feature, we’ll look at the benefits of hemp oil for hair health and how you can get started today. But first, let’s dive into what hemp oil even is.
What is hemp oil?
Hemp seed oil comes from the seeds of the cannabis sativa plant. Much like coconut oil or olive oil, it’s derived by factory pressing the natural fats from the seed. While primarily used in cooking, hemp seed oil finds other benefits in skin and hair health.
Hemp oils, on the other hand, can be made from the stalk of that same plant. These oils are extracted for their CBD content much more than the omega-3 or omega-6 fats. CBD has restorative qualities for health too, so we’ll dive in to which you should use for your hair.
But first, will hemp oil for hair get you high?
What’s the difference between marijuana and hemp?
Oils can be derived from marijuana or hemp, as both are technically breeds of the same plant. Modern agriculture allows farmers to genetically modify plants so that they have all of the qualities you need without the ones you don’t. That’s what happened in the case of marijuana vs. hemp.
Once upon a time, Cannabis sativa was its own thing, growing freely in the wild to contain as much THC, CBD, oils, flavonoids, or anything else that nature allowed. Since human intervention, scientists and farmers have modified one strain of Cannabis sativa to form hemp, while the others remain as marijuana. The hemp plant is much taller and bushier than its short, leafy counterpart. It’s also required by law to contain less than 0.3% THC concentration in the entire plant.
The seeds, from which hemp seed oil is derived, already feature the least amount of cannabinoids in the entire plant. Take the seed oil from hemp, and it’s almost impossible to get any THC, much less experience any kind of high.
Hemp is as much of an agricultural product as corn or wheat. You can eat it, use it for lotions, farm it for structural or clothing purposes, and so much more.
What we’re concerned about in this article, however, is the use of hemp oil for hair health.
Why should you use hemp oil for hair health?
The basic overview is that hemp oil contains vital nutrients to moisturize, nourish, and treat your hair. It digs in to your scalp and follicles to stimulate growth from the roots to provide a full-bodied look. Hemp oil for Baldness
If you’re rocking the bald look (or partially, unwillingly), it’s even more important to use hemp oil. Your scalp is on display, and applying regular lubrication will keep it sleek and healthy looking. Dry skin or a scalp infection can be unsightly, especially when there’s minimal hair to cover it up.
Giving your scalp a little massage when applying hemp oil increases blood flow and helps nutrient absorption. Your skin is lipophilic, meaning it loves to take in fats and oils, and hemp oil is chock full of polyunsaturated fats.
Can hemp oil regrow hair?
Some of us, however, might not want to remain bald or balding. Fortunately, hemp oil features natural proteins in addition to fatty acids in order to stimulate hair growth. The omega 3’s, 6’s and 9’s dive deep into your roots to nourish them, while the proteins promote the production of keratin, a crucial protein for hair production.
But don’t rush to the store, expecting one application of hemp oil to spark a full head of hair. It’s still debatable as to whether a fully bald head can regrow all of its hair with just hemp oil. However, it CAN improve the fullness and strength of existing hair, all the way down to the roots. That’s another benefit of these little fatty acids from hemp seed. Adding volume to withering hair can make your head appear full and revitalize your look.
Hemp Oil for Alopecia Areata
Alopecia is a medical condition that causes hair loss. Alopecia totalis causes hair loss all over the head, while alopecia universalis causes hair loss all over the body. Alopecia areata, however, results in patches of hair falling out.
In this case, your immune system attacks your hair follicles, resulting in diseased patches where hair can’t grow. As your hair, skin, and nails are all connected, alopecia areata often shows up in nail beds, causing them to lose shape or become rough.
Of course, the root cause comes from the immune system. Typical treatment features corticosteroid injections or other medication to suppress the immune system. While those are treating the root cause, hemp oil can help with the symptoms.
Hemp oil supplements your sick hair follicles with new proteins. Regular treatment can moisturize your scalp in bald spots and protect them from further damage. Combined with the help of a dermatologist, hemp oil can work wonders to counteract symptoms of alopecia areata.
Hemp Oil for Scalp Psoriasis
Scalp psoriasis is also an autoimmune disease attacking the skin. Outbreaks cause inflammation of the skin, and this can be incredibly painful and bothersome on the scalp.
I’ve been going on and on about the fatty acid content in hemp seed oils. It’s just a real fact – hemp oil is a fantastic source of polyunsaturated fats. Omega-3 fats have been specifically researched as a therapeutic treatment for psoriasis. One study showed a significant improvement in symptoms, reducing psoriasis through oral ingestion of omega-3 fats.
That’s right – you don’t always have to apply hemp oil topically to reap the benefits. Add hemp oil to your diet in your next meal, or get a hemp oil supplement to do the trick.
However, don’t count out the benefits of hemp oil masks and shampoos. The fatty acids in these moisturizers can cure existing dry skin and help prevent outbreaks. Let’s look at two of the most popular ways to utilize hemp oil for hair health.
Hemp oil hair mask
A hair mask is much like a face mask, except for, you know, your hair. As skin and hair health are directly related, you’ll reap the same benefits by applying a hemp oil hair mask and letting your follicles and roots soak up all the nutrients. You can buy some on Amazon or your local store, but that might cost you a pretty penny.
Instead, you can just purchase the hemp oil on its own and use household items to mix in the rest. It’s much cheaper, and you can get rid of the other half of the avocado you weren’t going to eat. Win win.
A simple recipe for a natural, homemade hemp oil hair mask
3-4 drops of hemp oil from your favorite distributor
Half of an avocado (without the skin)
½ of a banana
1 tbsp honey
1 tsp aloe vera
1 tsp coconut oil
Blend the above ingredients in a blender until you get a nice paste consistency. Remember – this isn’t a shampoo, so don’t expect that traditional gel-like quality.
Apply to evenly to your whole head, massaging it from the scalp outward. Yes, it will feel weirdly caked on for a bit, but let it dry for 10-15 mins. After you let it sit so the nutrients can soak in, wash it out with warm water.
Don’t use shampoo, however, as that will completely negate the effects of the oils. That brings me to my next point.
Is Hemp Shampoo Good For Hair?
If you DO want to go the more traditional route and use a hemp oil shampoo, go for it. Hemp shampoos can:
- Strengthen your hair
- Maintain moisture
- Prevent breakage or split ends
- Maintain texture
- Enhance hair growth
- Limit hair loss
But of course, not all hair is the same. So how will hemp shampoo work with your hair?
If you have….
Hemp shampoo can add volume. By nourishing it with amino acids, hemp shampoos stimulate the production of keratin for hair health. Keep an eye out for hemp shampoos with extra volumizing features as well.
The natural oils in hemp shampoos (and conditioners!) prevent dryness. Make sure to massage the shampoo deep in to the scalp to treat the roots and moisturize your hair from the inside out.
Those of us with lovely curls know the truth about frizz. Sometimes it seems like no matter what we do, we can’t tame those flyaways. Using a moisturising hemp oil shampoo can help keep your strands in like for the luscious look you’re going for.
Regardless if you’re choosing hemp oil shampoos or not, those with color-treated hair should make maintaining color the number 1 priority (after health, of course). Look for hemp oil shampoos that are specifically designed for dyed hair. The good fats and protein in the hemp oils will bring out your natural shine and enhance the coloring in your locks.
I specifically saved this one for last. With all the talk about the “good oils” in hemp, what does that mean for those with oily hair? Can we use hemp shampoo without our hair looking like a wet rag?
Surprisingly, yes. The natural oils in hemp oil treat your scalp and prevent dryness and dandruff. As oily hair usually accompanies a greasy scalp, itching and inflammation can result. The omega-3s and amino acids strengthen your hair, adding volume and keeping just the right amount of moisture.
However, you should still be on the lookout for hemp oil shampoos that are specifically marketed for oily hair, as lots of them contain other oils as well. Too much oil could be an issue.
